I cannot believe it’s been an entire year since we got married at the beautiful Combermere Abbey. The past 12 months didn’t just fly by, they travelled at the speed of light – before we knew it, March 2019 was upon us and we hadn’t even got round to framing any wedding photos. Luckily, what we had done is planned a night away for our first anniversary…right back to where our married life began. If you’re wondering where to stay on your first wedding anniversary (or your 50th, for that matter!) you truly need to look no further than Combermere Abbey’s North Wing.
Where To Stay
When we first visited Combermere Abbey’s North Wing on a wedding Open Day, we were completely and utterly blown away. We couldn’t believe how lucky we were to have such a perfect bridal suite waiting for us after our wedding day, and when we found out it was available to book into as a ‘bed and breakfast’ we were over the moon! I put ‘bed and breakfast’ into quote marks because it’s so much more than that – it’s a perfect blend of history, luxury and beauty, and you can just feel that it’s something special. We opted to stay in The Salamanca room, the same as on our wedding night, which is neighboured by the gorgeous Bhurtpore room. Another couple were staying next door, but as the North Wing is so grand you don’t hear a peep from other guests. We had a lovely conversation with them over breakfast, too!
From the second we arrived – and even the day before, when we received a courtesy call from Combermere checking we had everything we needed before check-in – we were completely spoilt by the amazing team. We were given lots of helpful information for our stay, and were able to choose our breakfast options ready for the next morning. At the North Wing you’re made to feel at home straight away. Both Tiz and I remarked that we hadn’t felt so relaxed in a long time. The photos of the room, sitting room and unbelievably chic adjoining bathroom speak for themselves – just beautiful.
What To Eat
I think we absolutely nailed it when it came to the food on our anniversary mini-break. For dinner during your stay at Combermere Abbey, be sure to book a table at the nearby Combermere Arms. The building and location are super cute, the food is gorgeous and it only takes a couple of minutes to drive to the pub from the North Wing. We had an amazing meal, and arriving back to the North Wing afterwards was pretty magical – it had gone dark whilst we were eating, and after stepping out of the car we could see every star in the sky. Living in the city it’s not something we get to enjoy often, and it was so special.
Now for the part of the post I’ve been waiting to write…we NEED to talk about the breakfast at the North Wing. I knew that it was going to be lovely, as we experienced the fabulous cooked breakfast the day after our wedding, but something about this delicious plateful of food was just next level. I had a vegetarian breakfast, whilst Tiz opted for a meaty Full English, and my goodness it was phenomenal. Freshly cooked to order, our breakfasts were simply perfect. Highlights of mine included the grilled halloumi and potato cakes, which were like dauphinoise potato stacks (out of this world!). Not to mention the coffee, juices, pastries and other treats we nibbled alongside our cooked meals! No exaggeration – it was the best breakfast I’ve ever had. I keep daydreaming about it!
What To Do
When you head to Combermere Abbey for a getaway, you feel completely rid of the stresses of the outside world. We literally felt our hectic lifestyle melt away as we made our way down the long driveway to the North Wing, and it was completely blissful to be amongst so much natural beauty. For us, the joy of Combermere is being able to have a relaxed wander around the amazing grounds (there are designated walks mapped out for you, and even wellies available to borrow!). If you were staying a little longer, the nearby market towns of Nantwich and Whitchurch are super cute, with plenty of places to stop for coffee, cake and a spot of shopping.
For us, the North Wing itself was the experience! The building has been restored with so much love and every detail is just gorgeous – wandering through to the sitting room next to The Salamanca and reminiscing about our wedding day (with a glass of champagne in hand) made for the perfect anniversary night away. You could easily spend an hour just relaxing in the stunning bath, with a view over the 143-acre mere! We both said we could have happily stayed another couple of nights, just taking in the magic of Combermere Abbey.
Do you have any anniversary traditions? If you’re looking for an idea for your next, we can recommend a stay at the North Wing with all our hearts!
