“Oh my god, I LOVE your dress!”
“Thanks – it has pockets!”
Has there ever been a conversation so short yet so satisfying? It is a universally known fact that pockets are the motherforking bomb (ps. on that note, has anyone watched the new episode of The Good Place yet? I can’t wait to catch up!).
For decades clothing designers have been trying to ‘improve’ dresses, adding bits on and cutting bits out, when the solution to making any dress instantly more appealing was to incorporate one simple element. No Sandra, we don’t want a bodycon with cut-outs around the hips, we JUST WANT POCKETS PLEASE.
The gorgeous ladies over at Joanie Clothing kindly sent me the Corey Lips Print Dress last week, which was awesome for two reasons: 1. The print is beyond adorable and 2. IT HAS POCKETS. I repeat, IT HAS POCKETS!
When I was wedding dress shopping, I actually tried on a gown that had the biggest hidden pockets you’d ever seen. The general style of the dress wasn’t for me, but since then I’ve felt like we’ve had a bit of a victory on the dress pockets front. They’re just so useful – whether you want to quickly stash your phone, keys or a tasty snack (listen, you never know when you’re going to need a bit of emergency sustenance. Imagine if you could just whip out a Milky Way Crispy Roll at will from your dress pocket?!) this little stunner has you covered.
Of course, pockets aren’t just useful for carrying essential valuables and small yet delicious chocolate bars. Pockets have a ~vibe~ all of their own. They’re chilled, they’re playful, they don’t care for stuffy fashion rules (when they’re on a dress as fabulous as this one). When you’re standing in the line at Costa wearing a normal pocketless dress, what do you do with your hands? Get out your phone and start scrolling through Instagram? NOT WITH THIS DRESS. You can put one hand nonchalantly in a pocket and stand there like a carefree Parisian queen. I bet you could even pull off a beret. That’s the kind of confidence pockets give you.
Women’s clothing has been lacking on the pockets front for so long. Even jeans and trousers that look bountiful in the pocket department are often lying to our very faces. That moment when you try to reach into the front pocket on a new pair of jeans only to be met with a fake pouch about half a centimetre deep is one of life’s tiny but irritating disappointments. Just the thought makes me even more grateful for the babes at Joanie!
I’m going to make it a little mission of mine to find some other great pocket-inclusive dresses to wear throughout the Autumn/Winter season, so if you have any recommendations please do let me know! Also, can we just talk about how cute the print on this Joanie dress is? I actually have the shirt version of this little number, and get so many compliments every time I wear it!
In case you’re wondering about the other outfit details here – the belt was from a gorgeous little Etsy shop called Fox and Owl. It doesn’t seem to be available now, and the shop itself looks inactive, but as it was quite a cult favourite item a few years ago you might find one popping up on eBay. The shoes were from New Look back in the spring and aren’t available now, but I’ve linked some similar ones from ASOS for you!
Let’s hear it for pockets!
