Every year, I find myself wondering how to find the perfect summer dress. EVERY SINGLE YEAR. It’s a fashion conundrum I’ve struggled with forever, because nothing ever seems to tick every box: can I dress it up and down? Does it suit my figure? If I have to throw on a jacket because of the inevitable Manchester rain will it still look good? Today I am very excited to say that I think I’ve cracked it with this beautiful River Island Pink Floral Swing Dress.
I found this beauty in the Petite section of River Island, which I’ve started to frequent as everything there just fits me better. I am only 5’4″ so it makes sense – plus, ‘mini’ is my dress length of choice so I can guarantee that a piece advertised as such won’t end up looking like a ‘midi’ on me.
How stunning is the lace up detail at the back of this dress? I paired it up with my current favourite sunglasses of life, which also happen to be from River Island, and Tiz and I had a wander around the gorgeous canals of Manchester whilst enjoying the sunshine. How awesome is this weather?! I’m keeping everything crossed that it’s going to stick around, the light evenings and blue skies are giving me life.
So one of my ultimate favourite things about this dress is that it looks PERFECT with a faux leather jacket. On its own the print and style isn’t necessarily ‘me’, but when paired with my studded jacket it looks pretty badass. I’ve always liked that contrast between a delicate, feminine dress and a tougher-looking coat or jacket – I feel like it’s a pretty good reflection of my style and gives off major Courtney Love-meets-Taylor Momsen vibes. This jacket was from Topshop YEARS ago, but I found this similar one on their site just now.
To finish off the whole look I opted for my old favourite Boohoo Platform Brogues. They’re no longer available in silver but I’ve linked the black ones for you – they’re surprisingly conformable and I wear them constantly. I’ve decided to embrace shoes which add a little more height this year, as they really do give me a confidence boost; I’ve never really minded being on the shorter side, but I do tend to prefer how outfits look on me when I’ve got that extra height going on. Aren’t we all so weird about our little body hang-ups?!
I truly think I’ve stumbled across my perfect summer dress for 2018, and know this is going to be one of my wardrobe staples all season long. I’m actually doing a bit of a wardrobe overhaul at the moment, donating lots of older pieces to charity and selling a few too. If anyone has any recommendation about the best place to sell your old clothes these days, please do leave me a comment and let me know!
