I have been an Avril Lavigne fan from day one – that is no exaggeration. In the summer of 2002 I was on holiday in Florida when I first saw her music video. When I arrived back, I heard Complicated on the radio and I was instantly hooked. I’ve followed her career and music since then, and it has always been a dream of mine to meet her.
On the 23rd Septeber, this dream finally came true! I had been at her Manchester concert with my best friend Georgie and our Italian Bandaids friends Francesca and Alice. We knew that there was a possibility of meeting her all day – the girls had both birthday gifts and Bandaids projects to present to her. It was all very last minute, but I couldn’t believe it when we were finally told we were going in to meet her – just minutes before it happened!
It was after her gig, and we were taken (along with Lewis from Bandaids!) back into the venue, across the stage and through various backstage corridors. We all stopped in a corridor, and I thought we were due to go down a set of stairs. When we’d been standing for a minute or so, Avril appeared – I was speechless for about a 30 seconds whilst she said hi to everyone, then I asked for a hug!
The weirdest thing about it was that is wasn’t weird! I felt like I’d known her forever and met her before – she was JUST like I thought she would be! She was absolutely gorgeous in the flesh and small but not as short as I thought – but that is coming from someone a similar size! She chatted to the girls for a little bit about the tour – they’d all met her before and had a few things to chat about! I told her that her show had been incredible, and that I’d heard so many good things about the tour from Georgie.
Avril is super shy in person, which is really cute! As the time went by (I thought we were in there for about 5 minutes but it was more like 15!) she relaxed much more and we all ended up having a laugh! I told her about my YouTube channel and she said “Oh my God! That’s amazing!”. Her make up artist was standing behind us all, and Georgie said “that’s who you should be talking to!”. Me being me, I didn’t realise who he was, so I just gave him a big smile and wave and said “hiiiii!” – that made Avril laugh which was so cute!
I absolutely LOVED it when she turned right to me and said “Your hair is amazing”! Her sister-in-law, Amie, said “I was jut about to say that!” and we had another little laugh! I thanked her and had the biggest smile on my face!
We had a couple of photos with her, which was awesome! I put my arm around her in mine, which made her duck down a little, but I still love it!
I also had a photo with her and Lewis – here’s us with and without him!
Afterwards, she gave us all hugs – TWO hugs from Avril Lavigne! I still can’t believe it all really happened, she was so lovely, down to earth and utterly sweet. I think it shows in the photos – she really relaxed around us and I felt like I’d known her (in person) for years!
Truly one of the best nights of my life – the gig was also incredible! Thank you Avril!
