When I was in Zara a couple of weeks ago and saw this ruffled number, my first thought was “huh, if I ever did an outfit post featuring this shirt I would have to call it ‘Hustle & Bustle'”. Well…
OK, I know a bustle is technically the thing worn under a skirt or dress to add fabulousness (didn’t doubt my historical fashion knowledge did you? You guys know I’m a geek) but the effect is there and that’s good enough for me. I have always had a thing for styles that look like they’ve been plucked from another era, and there was no way I was leaving this shirt behind in the store.
There were a few things I could have paired this shirt with, but because I was wearing it to go for a wander around the city with Tiz I decided to go mega casual. Ripped jeans and trainers probably aren’t the first things you’d think of matching with such a fancy shirt, but as always I can’t resist that glam-casual combo.
The jeans are my River Island Molly favourites, which I have worn almost exclusively for the past few weeks…you know when you find a pair of jeans that you just click with? That happened as soon as I tried these on. I used to be a bit wary of jeans – I felt they didn’t suit me, and wasn’t always particularly comfortable wearing them. I decided a few months ago that it was simply because I hadn’t discovered my ideal pair yet, and since then I’ve been on a mission to hunt down some awesome ones. This pair certainly made the grade!
Just a quick observation on the ripped jeans trend: why is it that within the first 10 seconds of owning a pair of ripped jeans, I always end up putting my foot through the knee holes whilst trying to get them on? Those wispy little strands of material that cover the rips don’t stand a chance with me around!
So, the verdict on the whole trainers-and-fancy-shirt combo? When I was wearing it I felt great – I got to swoosh around with my bustle whilst having super comfy tootsies courtesy of Adidas. Looking back on the photos I find myself excited to pair the shirt with some smarter trousers and perhaps some high shoes, but still love that I took a bit of a risk with this styling. It kind of matches the location too! From the photos this might look like a slightly grungy part of town, but we actually snapped these just off Deansgate outside some swanky-looking law offices!
The one and only downside to this awesome piece is that it’s white, and considering I am the clumsiest person who ever walked the planet you can bet it won’t stay that way for long. I literally don’t even have to leave the house to ruin an item of crisp white clothing, let alone wear it for too long around the city. However, this shirt did make it back to our apartment without any wine/coffee/sauce spilled on it, so that bodes well for the future!
