I hate getting sick. Shocking statement of the year alert (someone call the tabloids!) but seriously, it sucks. I’m currently sitting here typing away with no actual voice, which is hell on earth for someone who loves to talk as much as I do. It means I can’t do my usual presenting work, make my videos or even hold a conversation – I had to leave a blogger event early last night as I just couldn’t speak to anyone. I know, I know, cue the world’s tiniest violin playing the world’s saddest song, but it’s pretty easy to feel sorry for yourself when you look and feel like a potato. To try and turn it into something a bit more positive, I wanted to share my sick day essentials with you all – I’ve included some beauty pieces and some of my go-to remedies (I feel I should turn into a PSA here and say: as with any medicine, please don’t take any of these based only on my recommendation, read the label, talk to your doctor etc).
Let’s start with the fun stuff – beauty products! In a perfect world we’d all get our sick days off work to lie in bed, watch The Office and sip hot drinks, but it’s not always possible. Here’s how I try to transform myself from a zombie to, well, a zombie with a bit of mascara on…
Benefit They’re Real Mascara: I fell in love with this mascara a couple of years ago when it was first released, but hadn’t repurchased for a little while…that all changed a week or so ago when I picked one up in London, and I cannot believe I’ve spent so long without it. My lashes haven’t looked so good in, well, a couple of years, and being sick I find that the more fabulous your lashes and open your eyes look, the easier it is to conceal the fact you’ve only had 3 hours sleep due to a night of coughing. I adore it!
Smashbox Photo Finish Light Primer: Helping your foundation to stay in place when you’re ill is a vital step, as it’s likely you’ll be doing a range of delightful tasks including blowing your nose quite frequently…I always find that my Smashbox primer helps my make up to stay put, at least a little more than it would ordinarily. Every little helps, I guess!
Bourgois Healthy Mix Concealer: Redness around the nose, cheeks, chin (everywhere, basically) is one of the cold side effects I tend to experience on a pretty major scale, so a good concealer is key. I love this one from Bourjois as it’s not too heavy or cakey, and does a really good job of neutralising the red tones. Concealer is always tricky when you have dry patches, around your nose for example, but with that considered it still does a good job!
Vaseline Aloe Vera Lip Therapy: Dry lips are the bane of my life on an average day, but when I’m sick they go from bad to worse. Vaseline has been my friend for years on the lip front, and although I’ve switched to different lip balms over the years it’s the one I always come back to. I keep it handy to make sure my lips don’t get chapped and sore, which ticks one thing off the sick day list at least!
Rimmel Scandaleyes Eyeliner in Nude: Along with an amazing mascara, using a nude eyeliner to open up your eyes a little more is always a great plan, especially when you’re sick. This one from Rimmel is my current favourite – it’s really affordable, effective and lasts for ages too. I know I’ll be repurchasing it time and time again!
As I mentioned above, please don’t take any of my personal comments on these products to mean you should take them too – you should always get medicinal recommendations from a professional, not a Chyaz.
Strepsils Honey & Lemon: I started taking these the last time I had a bad throat, and they worked wonders for me – they really are soothing, and I only wish you could take them more frequently than you’re advised to. If I’m having a coughing fit I tend to reach for one for that awesome soothing element.
Twinings Soothing Chamomile & Honey Tea: Tea is just about my favourite thing in the world, and whilst this box from Twinings isn’t medicinal it is delicious and really soothing on the throat. I end up having multiple cups per day, as opposed to traditional honey and lemon drinks which I don’t love all that much. It works a treat for me!
Vicks First Defence Spray: I’ve sworn by this spray for a couple of years now, and whilst it hasn’t done an amazing job for me this time round (I feel like this cold was going to hit me regardless of what I did to prevent it!) I think it has still helped to lessen my symptoms.
Olbas Inhaler: That stuffy nose feeling is absolutely no fun, and this little Olbas inhaler helps to relieve that somewhat. There’s nothing pleasant about feeling like you can’t breathe out of your nose, and this quick fix solution wins me over every time.
So, those are my sick day beauty and remedy essentials – let me know all about yours in the comments, too!
