Review: MAC Surf Baby Short Shorts Eyeshadow

If you follow my YouTube channel, you’ll know that I’m not one to rush out and buy the latest high-end products for the sake of it; however, as soon as I saw a preview of MAC’s new Surf Baby collection, one product caught my eye – the Short Shorts eyeshadow!

MAC Surf Baby Short Shorts eyeshadow

I picked up the Β£12 eyeshadow on a trip to the Trafford Centre today, which was the first MAC purchase I’ve made since I was in San Francisco 4 years ago. Yes, it is possible to be a make-up geek without having a MAC obsession! Anyone involved with blog reading/YouTube video watching/doesn’t live in a cave will know that the opinion on MAC products is generally positive – I had high hopes for this product…did it live up to the stereotypical hype of MAC?

MAC Short Shorts Eyeshadow Open

My first impressions actually began in the store – it was the first time I’d been at a MAC counter and the staff had actually looked twice at me instead of ignoring the fact I’m there, which was refreshing! The packaging is…justΒ OK. It doesn’t blow me away, but of course it’s what inside that counts (aww, what a lovely sentiment!) I loved the colour as soon as I saw it – I would describe it as the lightest buttermilk shade I’ve ever seen, and it has a gorgeous frost to it. I had been looking for the perfect highlight colour to use in eyeshadow looks for a while, and felt that this was just the thing.

MAC Short Shorts Eyeshadow Swatch

As you can see, when the shadow is swatched the true shimmer of it comes out – it’s actually a more convincing highlight shade when on the skin than in the pan. I wouldn’t say that the product is super pigmented, but as a highlight colour that is ideal. If it were, there would be a danger of looking like you’d spent a little too long out in the cold and had formed a frost below your eyebrow! The texture is lovely, and far from chalky which I find is a common problem with lighter, frostier highlight shades. Of course, there’s no written rule which states that you have to use this to highlight – I just think it’s perfect for that.

So, am I now a complete MAC convert? Not quite – I honestly believe that drugstores carry some amazing products. Am I impressed with this product? Yes. Will I consider buying more MAC in the future? Quite possibly! I have to admit that I fell a little in love with the Surf USA eyeshadow whilst I was having a look round, and the Bust Out! lipstick also looks lush…there may be another review on the cards soon!

Have you tried any of the new MAC Surf Baby collection? I’d love to hear what you think.

Stay Creative,

    Hi Chyaz!
I love it when you said that you don’t need to have a MAC obsession if you love make-up.
Cool that you found the hightlight colour you were looking for!
It looks good to me, but i would never ever dare to spend so much money on one eyeshadow. Not that you judge you or anything, that was just my opinion πŸ™‚

Argh, I want this so much! I keep trying to resist because how many eyeshadows do I need but I think this just might tempt me! :p Mind you, it’s slightly cheeky of MAC to be adding money to their collections considering how rubbish quality some of them have been recently! And i think what you said is true, you don’t need a MAC obsession to love makeup or have good products! Great review πŸ™‚ x

I think some of them are worth it, for example I know I’ll use this so much πŸ™‚ and it is a bit cheeky! Thanks sweetie x

I got me a few MAC products when I first started being into makeup, but I realised that other brands (such as Benefit or Urban Decay) are as good as MAC ! I still get my makeup mainly from drugstores thoe =) I only purchase expensive makeup for things that I know i will use everyday like pencil liner, blush and foundation !

    Hi Chyaz! It’s siniris91 from Youtube =)
First of all, congrats for your blog, it’s really cool! I’ve just suscribed.
On the other hand, I have to say that I freaking LOVE MAC… I just have one lipstick from them (a dark red) but it’s awesome. Perpahs it’s a bit expensive, but it worths it. Nevertheless, I would like to get an eyeshadow, a pigment and another one lipstick, so I’ll tell you when I buy them! (I’m thinking about making make-up tutorials on YT… what’s your opinion?)
Keep making us smile, and kisses from Spain! xxxx
