How To Wear Red Lipstick

I constantly hear from people who tell me they ‘can’t pull off wearing red lipstick’ – the first thing I ever say to them is “yes, you can”! I truly think that, by observing a few simple guidelines, anyone can make red lips look hot, glamorous and absolutely stunning.

Here are my top tips!

1. Heavy on the lips, lighter on the eyes

If you’re going for a full-on red pout, keep the eyes a little more subtle. When wearing red lipstick I like to wear a little black eyeliner on the upper lashline, blended out and often flicked out slightly at the edge of the eye. It’s a timeless look and works every time.

2. Prepare and condition your lips beforehand

You’re never going to feel good in lipstick if your lips themselves are dry, cracked or sore. Make sure your lips are soft and smooth before applying your lipstick. It will go on much better and feel lovely to wear.

3. Choose your perfect shade

It took me a little while to find my perfect red lipstick, but when I did I was over the moon! My holy grail red lippy is Rockette Red by Rockalily (available HERE) – it is blue-based, which makes your teeth look whiter, and is perfect for pale girls like me. Check out the Rockalily website for tips on choosing the best red for your skin tone.

4. Get the look: the whole package

When I wear red lipstick, I like to feel glamorous. I tend to wear it with a monochrome outfit (not a rule but a personal preference!) and heels if I’m going out. I challenge anyone not to feel incredibly glam in heels, a little black dress and red lipstick!

5. Feed confident, look confident

If you love how you look and feel in red lips, it will show! I find it somewhat empowering; I can’t explain why, but I feel fantastic walking down the street with bold lips and the attitude to match. Try it – I dare you!

I absolutely love a full pin-up glamour look complete with bright red lips, it’s my favourite! You don’t see many girls wearing it these days so it’s fab to be a bit daring. My favourite lippy is MAC’s Russian Red x

I really love red lips too. I don’t wear it that often but it’s great for a really glam night out.

I love MAC Russian Red as well.

My main tip for wearing red lipstick is to just go for it, if you don’t feel confident with it bright red then start with a stain and gradually work up.
Red is a strong colour so stand tall and just work it.

I love wearing red lipstick, for some reason it makes me feel more confident, I generally go for a softer eye when I wear it though, but sometimes I will have a dark smoky eye with it.

I don’t know, if you know the TV show “My life as Liz”? Well, it’s a kinda-like Reality-Show about Liz Lee’s last year on high school. And because of her I’m really into wearing red lipstick everyday. But I have to work on my self confidence, because it’s stil weird wearing red lips in school. 🙂

I have full lips and smaller eyes, and I occasionally love just going with it and using red lipstick with some light mascara and a dusting of brown eyeshadow. I love E.L.F. in Posh, it’s just so awesome. Makes me feel beautiful and sophisticated 🙂

With red lipstick I always like to make sure to line my lips first–usually in a complimentary red, but even nude is ok for keeping the lipstick in place, as I’ll be going over it with the red. Part of feeling confident with a bold lip is knowing that it hasn’t smeared or budged–nothing worse than having to pull out a hand mirror every ten seconds! But if you want to do red as JUST a stain, you could skip liner, apply some red to the center of both bottom and top lip, and blend it out with a finger. You’ll have a thin layer that’s not going to slide all over. I love M.A.C. Red with the Cherry lip liner!

I’ve never had red lipstick before, I always thought it was, well “too much”. But maybe I’ll give it a go now, I’ve been wanting to try it ever since you’re so fond of it. 🙂
