Until recently, I was a little afraid of lipsticks. A ridiculous thing to be afraid of, I know, but it all just seemed like such alien territory – when I was at school, lipgloss was the ‘in’ thing, and lipgloss alone. Those who did wear lipstick, especially when we reached our final years in Sixth Form before University, did look slightly out of place. As odd as this may seem to anyone who went to or goes to a mixed-gender school, by the end of my time at Sixth Form I’d spent 6 years in all-girls education, and the little things did stand out.
Lipstick is something I’d always seen my mum wear who – by the way – always has amazing make up, and as we’re both fans of ‘cooler’ tones, I decided to note what she was wearing on her lips. She tends to lean towards the pinks and pinky-browns that suit her colouring, so I decided to give one a go. And, as they say, the rest is history. I am a lipstick convert (although I still tend to only wear it on nights out). Here is a quick run-down of my favourite lipsticks, and why they are my favourites.
This is Rimmel London Lasting Finish Lipstick in Amethyst Shimmer – my ultimate favourite lipstick of all time. It is the most exceptionally beautiful pink shade I have ever come across – it’s shimmery, bold and lasts for ages. With having blonde hair, I have to be careful that I don’t go for ‘Barbie’ shades – I’m no doll! This lipstick is flattering in every way and also works great with my fair skin. This was on offer for around £4.99 when I bought it from Superdrug.
Secondly, the Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red. When I bought this, I had been looking for my perfect red colour for a little while, and realised that it would be a true, bold red that would work best with my skin tone and style. I honestly believe any woman can wear red lipstick – it’s all about finding the shade. This is my perfect one – I love that I can use it on a night out to feel glamorous and classy, or to rock more of a ‘pin up’ look on an everyday basis (when I’m feeling very brave). This was again from Superdrug for around £7.99. Love it!
When I first bought this lipstick, the Elf Lipstick in Gipsy, I was slightly torn on my review of it due to the fact that it was quite sheer. However, after a while I completely fell in love with it – the sheerness actually works for me instead of against, as if it were any bolder I might end up in ‘Barbie’ territory. I find this easy to wear for occasions such as dinner with friends, as if it comes off whilst eating, it isn’t super noticeable. Lovely for adding a dash of life to your lips. I bought this from the ELF website for £1.50.
The final lipstick I have to share is the MUA Cosmetics Lipstick in Shade 11. I bought this from Superdrug for just £1, and wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. What I did end up with is another favourite of mine – it’s towards the brown end of the pink spectrum, and is probably the ‘brownest’ I could go until it stopped suiting me. Apart from the fact it’s a bargain, this lipstick is again great for those times when you want to add a little colour without going too bold.
I swatched the lipsticks for you – from L-R – Rimmel London Amethyst Shimmer, Revlon Really Red, ELF Gipsy, MUA Shade 11.
I hope you’ve found this helpful, and feel free to share your favourites with me in the comments!
